Course Descriptions

Introduction to Civil 3D

This course provides the student with a detailed, hands-on introduction to the core functionality of AutoCAD® Civil 3D®. Students move through the course following an actual design project, processing existing conditions information from a variety of sources, creating a working Civil 3D project, and moving through layout and design phases of the project, including road and site grading. The concepts explored are pertinent to any applications of Civil 3D: residential and commercial private development, municipal or highway engineering, or specialized applications, such as landfill, stream restoration or mining.

The classes within the course run sequentially, with Intermediate following Essentials. Students can treat the course program as a comprehensive introduction to the program taken consecutively, or as two different classes taken at different times.

The dataset for each class is available for download from an FTP site upon its conclusion. The files provided include the Civil 3D template drawing used in the class, which is a valuable resource itself.

CivilTraining, LLC’s courses are registered Continuing Education classes with the AIA and have received approval in meeting continuing education/professional development requirements for numerous states. Note: Each CivilTraining, LLC course provides relevant continuing education/professional development approval criteria.

AutoCAD Civil 3D Essentials (3 Days)

This 3-day class introduces the model-based design technology in AutoCAD® Civil 3D®, and provides the core for its application in civil engineering and survey projects of any type. The class examines the Civil 3D interface and environment, the management of settings and styles, and the development of civil project data, both from information developed within Civil 3D and from interaction with other products.

The Civil 3D Essentials class moves from an examination of the Civil 3D interface and concepts through the start of a typical survey and design project. Consideration is given to the best way to organize drawings and data for Civil 3D, and to the organization and creation of a Project through the Civil 3D program. The class then proceeds through Existing Conditions Surface Modeling, the processing and display of Point Data, the layout, creation and editing of Alignments, and the creation of Parcels for ROW, lot and open space areas within the project.

Topics include:
  • Civil 3D Concepts and Environment
  • Creating Data in Civil 3D - Existing Surface from Existing Conditions Data
  • Working with Civil 3D Point Data
  • Surface Creation from Civil 3D Point Data
  • Civil 3D Project Management
  • Civil 3D Alignments
  • Civil 3D Parcels
