Reality Capture - UAV/Drone, Scanning and Data Extraction

CivilTraining, LLC is focused on training industry professionals in emerging technologies such as aerial LiDAR, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) photogrammetry, 3D laser scanning systems, and point cloud data extraction. These new technologies are changing the way we measure, inspect, monitor, and build the world around us.

The knowledgeable instructors of CivilTraining, LLC are not the only thing that differentiates the quality of our training from our competitors. The most important aspect of our training is that it is hands-on and focused around real world application. Instead of teaching hypotheticals and theory, CivilTraining, LLC focuses on teaching content relevant to performing daily operations. Instructors review the core concepts necessary to utilize reality capture technologies, and then begin to guide students through a project from beginning to end. This allows students to acquire the skills necessary to implement and integrate what they learn into their own workflows.

Although CivilTraining, LLC has traditionally trained engineering, survey, and construction professionals, we have expanded our scope to all industries interested in using reality capture. Due to the interest from these alternative industries, which includes public safety, law enforcement, energy and utility, and insurance investigation, CivilTraining, LLC creates a custom course tailored to the audience in attendance.


Leica Cyclone® for Surveyors – 16.0 Hours (2 Days)

This class introduces Leica Cyclone, and provides the necessary workflow to extract data from point clouds acquired from laser scanners and drones. This class reviews point cloud topics, the Leica Cyclone interface and environment, the management of settings and templates, registration of scans, quality checking point clouds, aligning scans to control, developing point cloud deliverables, and extracting topographic data from point clouds by means of virtually surveying your data.

The Leica® Cyclone for Surveyors class examines the capabilities of Cyclone and the procedures necessary to process data acquired from Leica Scanners and extract survey-grade data. Consideration is given to provide attendees with the best workflow possible to integrate scanning technologies into their current survey workflow. Participants benefit from receiving hands-on experience throughout the duration of this course. Students will process data provided by the instructor or from the ‘Leica Pxx Series Scanning for Surveyors’ course. This unique involvement will allows attendees to personally experience the entire Cyclone workflow from processing to deliverable.

Topics addressed in this class are appropriate for surveyors engaged in most survey applications, such as topographic, mapping, ALTA, construction and engineering support, and reality capture. Leica® Cyclone is a powerful reality capture tool, applicable across a wide range of survey applications, and this course brings hands-on, real project experience to the training.

Note: This course provides a core introduction to extracting data from point clouds pertinent to surveyors through the utilization of Leica® Cyclone. Attendees should already have acquired Leica® Cyclone licensing. Specifically, the modules ‘Register’ and ‘Survey’ (or ‘Model’ which includes the ‘Survey’ features) are required to produce survey-grade data from point clouds. If the attendee has not purchased their Cyclone modules, it is highly recommended to contact CivilTraining, LLC prior to purchasing. Although not a licensed dealer, CivilTraining, LLC can provide consulting services to ensure you acquire the appropriate software required to fulfill your needs.

Pix4D® Drone Topography for Surveyors – 16.0 Hours (2 Days)

This class introduces drone mapping technology through Pix4D®, and provides the necessary workflow to acquire survey-grade data. The class reviews drone photogrammetry topics, flight planning, the Pix4D® interface and environment, the management of settings and templates, Pix4D deliverables, and how surveyors can produce point clouds to extract topography.

The Pix4D® Drone Topography for Surveyors class examines drone capabilities in regards to acquiring survey-grade data. The course reviews how drone technology can be used in typical survey projects. Consideration is given to the best way to design flights based on your drone’s capabilities. Participants benefit from receiving hands-on experience throughout the duration of this course. Students will receive a test project, design a flight plan based on the scope of work, fly the project, and process the acquired data. This unique involvement will allow students to personally experience the entire drone topography workflow.

Topics addressed in this class are appropriate for surveyors engaged in most survey applications, such as topographic, mapping, ALTA, construction and engineering support, and volume calculations. Pix4D® is a powerful photogrammetry processing tool applicable across a wide range of survey applications, and this course brings hands-on, real project application experience to the training and effective use of drone based mapping.

sUAS Operation and Program Development – 8.0 Hours (1 Day)

This class introduces how to properly operate and implement a sUAS (small Unmanned Aerial System) program under FAA regulation. This class reviews common FAA requirements, UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) policy development, maintenance plans, pilot and flight logs, LAANC, the basics of applying for waivers, and local airspace challenges relevant to your area.

The sUAS Operation and Program Development class examines the requirements a firm must fulfill in order to operate a sUAS program safely while meeting 14 CFR Part 107 regulation. Consideration is given to provide attendees with the knowledge to correctly maintain UAV equipment and accessories. There is additional focus on how to properly document all forms of sUAS activities. Participants benefit from receiving maintenance plans tailored to their UAV and company specific guidance on developing a sUAS program.

Topics addressed in this class are appropriate for firms engaged in most UAV applications, such as photography, videography, inspection and monitoring, surveying (mapping and topographic), construction and engineering support, and reality capture.

Note: This course provides a core introduction to firms interested in developing and utilizing a sUAS program. Attendees should already have their remote pilot certification (14 CFR Part 107) or be in pursuant of said certification. If attendees have not already purchased a drone and accessories, it is highly recommended to contact CivilTraining, LLC prior to purchasing. Although we are not a licensed dealer, CivilTraining, LLC can provide consulting services to ensure your firm acquires the appropriate sUAS equipment and software specific to your firm’s sUAS needs and services.

This class introduces the Pxx Series Scanners (P20, P30, P40 and P50), and the necessary workflows to acquire survey-grade data while in the field. The class reviews scanning topics, capabilities, methodologies, Pxx interface, instrument settings, and field procedures.

The Pxx Series Scanning for Surveyors’ class examines the capabilities of the Leica scanners in regards to acquiring survey-grade data. The course reviews how scanner technology can be used in typical survey projects. Consideration is given to your scanner’s capabilities, site conditions, and the project’s scope. Participants benefit from receiving hands-on experience throughout the duration of this course.

Topics addressed in this class are appropriate for surveyors engaged in most survey applications, such as topographic, mapping, ALTA, construction and engineering support, and reality capture. The Leica scanners are powerful instruments applicable across a wide range of survey applications, and this course brings hands-on, real project application experience to the training and effective use of scanner acquired data.

Note: This course provides a core introduction to laser scanners pertinent to surveyors through the Leica Pxx Series Scanners. Attendees should already have acquired their Pxx Series Scanner with applicable Leica Cyclone licensing. Specifically, the Leica Cyclone modules ‘Register’ and ‘Survey’ are required to produce survey-grade data from point clouds. Your scanner will be utilized during the class to provide hands-on field training to attendees. This course is meant to function as a prerequisite for the ‘Leica Cyclone – Topography for Surveyors (2-3 Day Class)’.
