AutoCAD Civil 3D Survey Field Work Applications (1 Day)

This course focuses on practical field applications for AutoCAD® Civil 3D® Survey, and the ability to easily produce accurate, intelligent drawings representing field conditions in 2D and 3D.

The term "Field to Finish" is frequently used to describe the process of transferring data from the field crew to the finished drawing. There are many elements that go into developing an intelligent field-to-finish strategy, all with the potential to impact survey field personnel and field productivity. Carefully developed and introduced, Civil 3D and its companion products can provide a high level of efficiency in transferring field data into finished drawings and engineering models.

This class examines management of both point data with attribute information and intelligent linework creation. The point data management is controlled by Civil 3D directly, through the development of Description Keys and Styles. Linework is somewhat more complicated in Civil 3D, and can be handled by any combination of three toolsets: the legacy Figure language coding as used in AutoCAD® Land Desktop, Civil 3D linework coding introduced in recent versions of Civil 3D, or coding through SmartDraft® PConnect, an add-in program for Civil 3D. This class will examine the capabilities of each, and the class and its field practice will focus on the methods preferred by the participants.

This class provides time for field practice in the collection of data with the participants' survey equipment. Accordingly, potential participants should contact the instructor in advance to discuss their current practices and coding methods employed, and participants should plan to bring their field equipment to the class.

Topics include:
  • Overview of Civil 3D Survey Field Work Capabilities
  • Managing Points with Description Keys
  • Creating Field Linework in Civil 3D
  • Surface Creation Concepts and Field Linework
  • Field Practice in Civil 3D Linework Applications
  • Figure Data in Civil 3D

Using AutoCAD Civil 3D Survey – Controlling Point Display – 1.0-Hour Conference Class - Available Upon Request

Points provide the basic interface for representing surveyed existing conditions in AutoCAD® Civil 3D®. This class, presented at selected Survey Conferences and local Survey Association Chapter meetings, explores the nature of the Civil 3D Point: its creation, display, organization and editing.

AutoCAD Civil 3D provides a powerful set of tools for the processing and preparation of survey projects, but the program can seem overly complex in how point data are displayed, both in appearance and labeling. This class provides a concise overview of how Civil 3D point display works, in both initial setup and manipulation for individual drawing requirements. The class is based on actual experience using Civil 3D in survey applications, and participants will be able to download a complete Civil 3D template drawing to be able to put the solution immediately to use.

AutoCAD Civil 3D Survey Project Management and Data Import – 1.0-Hour Conference Class - Available Upon Request

AutoCAD® Civil 3D® Survey operates as a separate data environment within Civil 3D, with its own separate project management and setup. This class explores in detail the organization, setup and management of the Civil 3D Survey project, including best practices for its organization and use. Critical settings within the project are reviewed, including setting related to units and coordinate systems. The class then examines data import techniques for bringing field data into the project, including imports from fieldbook files, LandXML and coordinate data, and for making edits and corrections to field data already imported. The class also explores strategies for managing projects on both state plane and assumed coordinate systems, and translations and interactions between the two.

AutoCAD Civil 3D Survey Networks – Editing and Traverse Analysis – 1.0-Hour Conference Class - Available Upon Request

AutoCAD® Civil 3D® Survey utilizes a network-based organization for capturing survey observation and coordinate data. This class explores Civil 3D Survey networks and how they provide relationships and connectivity to survey data. The 3D nature of the Civil 3D Survey network is examined as a tool for evaluating and detecting errors in field work. The editing of survey observations and sideshots within the network will be examined in detail. The class then examines how traverses are managed within the network, including the requirements for traverse definition within Civil 3D survey. The class also examines various techniques for traverse closure reports, closure analysis and the update of observation, sideshot and drawing data.

AutoCAD Civil 3D Survey Migration for Land Desktop Users – 1.0-Hour Conference Class - Available Upon Request

This class serves as a primer for surveyors transitioning from AutoCAD® Land Desktop to AutoCAD® Civil 3D® Survey. The organization and operation of Civil 3D Survey is considerably different from what was in Land Desktop, and this class focuses on strategies for moving data between the products with a minimum of difficulties. While this class touches on the topics briefly, participants should be familiar with Civil 3D organization and display of point data, as well as Civil 3D Survey project organization and setup from other classes offered. This class specifically addresses the preparation of drawings and data within Land Desktop for transfer into Civil 3D, and the export-import process utilizing ASCII files, LandXML files and direct import of Land Desktop data from within Civil 3D itself. Considerations for the migration of older project data prior to Land Desktop 2009 are addressed, as well as discussion of sending data from Civil 3D back to Land Desktop when needed. The organization of jobs and projects where both Land Desktop and Civil 3D must be used on an ongoing basis are also explored.
