AutoCAD Map 3D and Map

The Autodesk®Geospatial AutoCAD® products, AutoCAD® Map 3D and the AutoCAD Map tools underlying AutoCAD® Civil 3D®, provide a full-featured set of tools for GIS applications as well as management of data in Civil Engineering, Surveying and Land Planning applications.

Map classes from CivilTraining, LLC explore the capabilities of either AutoCAD Map 3D or the AutoCAD Map functionality in Civil 3D. The classes serve as an introduction to Map for those interested in its use as a complete GIS toolset, those using Map in conjunction with Esri® products for GIS applications, or those in the Civil Engineering, Surveying and Land Planning industries who wish to explore the Map capabilities in their AutoCAD products.

Two classes are offered in the CivilTraining, LLC Map training program, at the Essentials and Intermediate levels. Additional advanced level training and consulting on specific geospatial projects and solutions can also be provided.

CivilTraining, LLC Map training is entirely hands-on, using data developed from our years of consulting experience in geospatial projects across a wide variety of industries.

CivilTraining, LLC’s courses are registered Continuing Education classes with the AIA and have received approval in meeting continuing education/professional development requirements for numerous states. Note: Each CivilTraining, LLC course provides relevant continuing education/professional development approval criteria.

AutoCAD Map 3D Essentials (2 Days)

This course explores the capabilities of AutoCAD® Map, either as a component of AutoCAD® Civil 3D® or as the separate product, AutoCAD® Map 3D. The class serves as an introduction to Map for those interested in its use as a complete GIS toolset, those using Map in conjunction with Esri® products for GIS applications, or those in the Civil Engineering, Surveying and Land Planning industries who wish to explore the Map capabilities in their AutoCAD products.

The class provides a comprehensive overview of the Map tools for managing various types of graphical and non-graphical data. The class examines the use of Map source drawings providing selective viewing, querying and plotting of data across different drawings through work sessions. This class also examines Map's capabilities for management of non-graphical data through Map Object Data and external database attachments. Non-graphical data of this type may be created within Map for GIS/Mapping applications, may be imported into drawings in AutoCAD Map from external files such as shapefiles, or may be developed using Map tools for engineering and design takeoffs and estimating.

Editing and conversion aspects of the course focus on Map's ability to interchange data with other CAD and GIS systems, and to easily produce smaller, geometrically correct drawings.

Topics include:
  • Introduction to AutoCAD Map 3D
  • Working with Map Source Drawings
  • Map Coordinate Systems
  • Map and Drawing-Based Attributes
  • Working with Map Object Data
  • Importing Data Files into the Map Drawing
  • Map Queries and Analysis with Drawing Data
  • Map and External Databases
  • More Advanced Map Data Operations
  • Map Tools and Utilities

AutoCAD Map 3D Intermediate (2 Days)

This class continues the examination of the features in AutoCAD Map 3D, with additional emphasis on their applications in GIS. Much of the material covered in this class is common to both Map 3D and the map component of Civil 3D; the exception is certain survey and coordinate geometry tools that differ between the two programs. Owners of either Map 3D or Civil 3D will benefit from this course, and direction for operators of either program will be provided.

The Map 3D Intermediate class deals with concepts uniquely suited to GIS and Mapping applications, such as Object Classification, Topologies and Dynamic Annotation. Additionally the class explores the use of Feature Data Objects, providing a means to interface with a number of external data formats and sources.

Topics include:
  • Using Feature Data Objects in Map 3D
  • Editing Feature Data
  • Using Object Classification in Map 3D
  • Stylizing Drawings and Features
  • Dynamic Annotation in Map 3D
  • Working with Topologies in Map 3D
  • Topology Applications in Map 3D
  • Creating and Transforming Geospatial Data
  • Advanced Editing in Map 3D
  • Working With Raster Data in Map 3D
  • Advanced Map Tools and Utilities
  • Using Map 3D Collaboratively with Esri Products

GIS for Land Surveyors – Concepts, Solutions and Applications – 4-Hour Conference Class - Available Upon Request

This class, offered at selected survey conferences, explores the basics of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and how this maturing technology can be leveraged by land surveyors. Using both ArcGIS® from ESRI® and AutoCAD® Map 3D or AutoCAD® Civil 3D® from Autodesk®, the class shows how surveyors can integrate GIS solutions and opportunities, often without the need for additional software. The class will explore basic definitions of GIS concepts and examine concepts, such as data sources, data types and spatial analysis – all within the framework of actual survey/GIS projects prepared and delivered by the instructors. The class will examine how field data can be brought into a GIS system created in both ArcGIS and AutoCAD. The class will then explore practical applications of both ArcGIS and AutoCAD, and how the two products can be used seamlessly together to accomplish the creation, editing, analysis and presentation of data in GIS projects.

Meet the Instructors for this course: John Cooke and Kevin Zelinsky.
